Tramontina

The name Tramontina stands for: "Tradition Made in Brazil" - high-quality household goods with a sustainability plus. In 1911, the Tramontina company took the first step on its long road to success in the city of Carlos Barbosa. The small forge created by Valentin and Elisa Tramontina became the basis of a company that now consists of 8 factories. In addition to product quality, social and, above all, ecological sustainability is particularly important to Tramontina. The company is committed to preserving the Brazilian rainforest, for example.

THE KNIFE MAKERS OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL

Anyone who has had the opportunity to try some of the Churrasco from Brazilian grill specialist Adriano Gabriel will be able to understand how much his grilling skills can fuel the desire to travel to Brazil. And so, a few years ago, FIRE&FOOD set off for South America. Of course, we took the opportunity to visit the factory of the well-known Tramontina knife smithy in Carlos Barbosa and take a closer look at the production of the legendary steak knives and grill skewers.

The T-Store concept offers the entire Tramontina range. Today there are several locations.

If you are looking for authentic Churrasco in Brazil, this is
Tramontina factory is a good place to start, as the factory tour ends with a typical barbecue tasting.

The family business has developed from a small knife maker's shop into an international corporation and when you visit it, you notice that the workers seem to strongly identify with the company and are probably proud to work here.

We are particularly interested in the production of the "polywood" handles that are used on Tramontina cutlery and that can be put in the dishwasher despite the wooden component. (Although fans of sharp knives will probably raise their eyebrows, we are talking about steak knives and not meat knives here - this is a subject where cultural worlds collide, which we will address again in another issue.)

The blades are made of rust-proof and particularly hard stainless steel to stay sharp for a long time. The handles are made of many layers of pinewood, all of which are impregnated with resin and then bonded together using pressure. They are then heavily polished so that even years of use cannot harm them. After the "marriage" of blade and handle, rivets ensure that everything stays where it belongs and that the knives are nice and stable in the hand.

While in Germany we tend to associate Tramontina with knives and barbecue accessories, we were amazed when we came across the entire product range in the T-Store: From barbecues to cooking pots to kitchen appliances and garden furniture, an impressive range is represented here.

The knife handles are pressed from plywood. A special polishing process gives the handles an extremely smooth and robust surface.
