Product Test: Pitboss Lexington Onyx Edition

The Fire and Smoke Grill
Test: Elmar Fetscher

The Pit Boss Lexington – a grill that can be operated with wood and charcoal – comes in the classic shape of a barrel smoker. Compared to the charcoal kettle grills usually available on the market, the shape and appearance of the Lexington enrich the offering. What else the grill can do is shown in the FIRE&FOOD practical test.

Data and Assembly:
Pit Boss sent FIRE&FOOD the grill in its sales packaging (38 kg) via freight forwarding. It was very neatly and securely packaged, perhaps with a little too much styrofoam, but arrived undamaged. So the assembly can begin. The enclosed assembly instructions are easy to understand, as is the blister packaging with the screws and other small parts. The assembly took about an hour in total. The grill has dimensions of approximately 1 m in width and just over 1 m in height with a depth of 0.6 m. The sturdy cart and the cooking chamber weigh 33.8 kg.

In Operation:
For operation, large pieces of charcoal are advantageous, as pieces that are too small will fall through the charcoal grate. Whether ignition takes place in the huge, movable ash pan outside or via the cooking chamber is a matter of taste – we prefer the path via the cooking chamber with the grate pushed aside. The cooking chamber temperature can be well regulated via an inlet air valve and several adjustable outlet openings, which works perfectly for smoking. Grilling visually with the lid open over the embers provides a lot of flavor. BBQ is a bit more difficult on the Lexington. Without a thermometer, temperature control must be done with an external measuring device.

1. Screws etc. – well-sorted and labeled.

2. Extendable ash drawer with ventilation valve.

3. Sturdy, large wheels.

4. The easy-to-clean firebox.

5. The enamelled, two-piece grate offers a grilling surface of 3,503 cm2.

6. The grate storage.

7. There is enough distance between embers and grate.

8. Regulation of the exhaust openings with a slide.

Conclusion:
The Lexington Onyx by Pit Boss impresses with its stable design, good workmanship, and appealing aesthetics. The charcoal grate could still be improved. For those who enjoy grilling with a wood fire, this grill offers a multitude of possibilities at a good price/performance ratio.
