Preview: Sparkling ideas for the perfect embers
Making a fire brings out our archaic side. Grilling with charcoal or charcoal briquettes is of course part of this. It's not just a matter of turning the switch or pressing the button to prepare something good to eat. But until the embers are finally ready to grill, you can despair for a variety of reasons. Especially if you're not quite so experienced and have a hungry crowd breathing down your neck who can hardly wait until there's finally something to eat. That can make you a little nervous. Some people immediately think of the spirit bottle, as the sad record of grill accidents shows every year. Dangerous recklessness that often injures not only the grill master, but also the guests standing around, and is simply no longer understandable in this day and age. After all, there are various tested and therefore safe lighting aids on the market. In the new issue of FIRE&FOOD (from July 2nd, 2021) we present these practical helpers!
Lighting aids ensure the perfect grill embers and make the grilling experience easier. You can find out which models are available in the new FIRE&FOOD 03/2021.
How to light charcoal and charcoal briquettes? Here's how!
You can create a usable ember in the grill if you don't start burning too many pieces of charcoal at once. One or two handfuls of charcoal are enough to let it burn with the help of barbecue lighters until the first embers form. Only then do you add another two handfuls of charcoal or place the barbecue briquettes on the first embers to extend the grilling time. As soon as the second layer has formed embers again, you can continue using this "layer principle" until there are enough charcoal or briquettes in the grill. To ensure that the embers are evenly distributed, you must ensure that there is sufficient air supply from below. To do this, open all the ventilation slides. The charcoal pieces or briquettes are preheated and ready for grilling when all the pieces are covered with a fine gray-white layer of ash. If you want to speed up the formation of embers, it is best to ensure that there is more air supply using a bellows or something similar. If you only want to grill with briquettes, stack a few small pyramids of them in your grill and place a grill lighter in the middle of each pyramid to light the coals. As soon as the pyramids are glowing, the coal can be distributed.
