The Gambacher Kreuz is probably a familiar name to every HR and SWR listener who often follows the traffic jam reports on the radio. But the eponymous place right next to the motorway also shows potential when it comes to leaving a lasting impression. At least in a culinary sense. Anyone looking for truly authentic US barbecue should definitely plan a stop at Little Suzy's Smoke Shack BBQ on their way from north to south or south to north. Suzanne "Little Suzy" Günther moved from Kansas City to Germany in 2007. With her was a long-held dream: to open her own Southern Food barbecue restaurant. But it took more than a decade before she dared to fulfill this dream in early 2020 by buying an old snack hut in a gas station parking lot. She used the time before that to hone her recipes as a professional cook and to accompany American roots musicians at their concerts as a photographer.
Together with her husband, she renovated the hut and turned it into a little piece of home in Kansas City style - and just when things were about to get going, Corona and other adversities came along. But now she has established her small and very fine southern barbecue and her reputation precedes her as far as Frankfurt. The menu includes all the well-known BBQ classics, smoked for hours in the Southern Pride Smoker. Suzy sources the meat locally and everything, including the pickles, is produced on site. "The Shack" is a little piece of southern happiness for anyone who wants to get involved.
