What fruit brandy is to southern Germans, grain is to northern Germans. But while northern Germans generally have little reservations about southern German spirits, the opposite is not necessarily true. This may be because the aromas of raspberry brandy and cherry brandy are used to enhance cakes and desserts throughout Germany, while grain does not play a culinary role and has not been able to establish itself across the region. For several years, some grain distilleries in northern Germany have been concentrating on the task of creating a fine spirit from the mass product grain brandy. One of these is the Ehringhausen distillery in Münsterland, which FIRE&FOOD visited. Here, siblings Theres and Georg Glitz-Ehringhausen are realizing a lifelong dream that their ancestors had instilled in them. Their distillates mature into spirits with character through craftsmanship.
